Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR)

Although most test methods fit into either the continuous instrumental, wet chemistry, or gas chromatography categories, there are a few that don't. The most common one is EPA Method 9, which is determination of opacity as visible emissions (VE).  This procedure utilizes a human observer as the "analyzer".  While it may sound "hokie", some people are pretty good at it. Visible emissions evaluators are required to be certified by field trial every six months. [Product Image] Another technique which falls outside of the traditional categories is Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) technology (EPA Methods 318, 320 and 321).
FTIR is capable of semi-continuously determining a wide variety of compounds with relatively low detection limits.  There are a number of other EPA test procedures that are not easily categorized, however, most of these are strictly analytical procedures that are used for input into mass balance or consumption based emissions determination.
